Webinar – Para Sport Against Stigma: Using the Games to Challenge Discrimination

Event Details:

Date: August 22, 2024
Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm BST
Location: Zoom Webinar in English
Hosted by: Loughborough University

About the Event:

The AT2030 Para Sport Against Stigma (PSAS) project focuses on addressing disability-related stigma in Africa by using Para sports to encourage the use of assistive technology (AT). The project examines broadcasting, community engagement, and the development of Para athletes to promote better representation and communication within Para sports. The aim is to break down societal barriers and make it easier for people with disabilities to access AT.

In African contexts, stigma and discrimination are significant obstacles, with only about 3% of people with disabilities having the AT they need. The webinar will share insights gained over the last four years through a collaboration between Loughborough University, the University of Malawi, and the International Paralympic Committee. The discussion will cover the importance of community involvement and localization in driving social change. Topics will include the impact of broadcasting the Paralympic Games across Africa for the first time, community engagement strategies, and athlete development. The session will also look ahead to the Paris Paralympic Games and the next phase of the project.
