As we know people with disabilities face greater barriers and are less likely to participate in sport and active recreation compared to the general population. On top of this people with disability are more likely to feel lonely and have fewer and lower quality friendships. This leads to poorer mental and physical health outcomes. The impact of COVID-19 has made this worse for many.

However, we also know that sport and active recreation provides an important social outlet and opportunity to make friends. So as sport begins to reopen in a COVID normal world it’s important that sport providers are ready to make the most of the opportunity to foster an inclusive culture that leads to genuine friendship between participants with and without disability.

To help you with this, our co-Director and founder of Inclusive Sport Design, Michael Woods has created a series of online Masterclasses featuring global inclusion experts. The first Masterclass will teach you all about creating friendships through inclusive sport and features Lisa Drennan from Merge Inclusion Consulting.

Video intro:

In this ISD Masterclass Lisa Drennan teaches the importance of friendship in creating genuinely inclusive experiences for people with diverse abilities. Lisa shares why friendship is important for inclusion and how you can create pathways to friendship between people with and without disability in your sport and recreation programs and activities.

Here is a quick overview of what is in the course:

Lesson 1: Welcome and introduction
Lesson 2: The importance of friendship and models of participation
Lesson 3: Building the pathway towards friendship

Masterclasses are designed to be short, engaging and highly practical. Each masterclass focusses on a niche area of inclusive practice presented by experienced inclusion experts who are doing it in the real world.
