Join the UNESCO Chair Inclusive Physical Education, Sport, Recreation & Fitness for a session on how the UPR can be utilized to promote human rights in and through sports, including the presentation of tools to facilitate better reporting on physical education, physical activity and sport by State and non-State actors to the UPR and UN human rights treaty bodies.

The sports sector globally is mobilising itself to elevate and quantify its delivery on human rights and Agenda 2030. This session will outline current and ongoing work of the global sports movement to align with human rights treaty instruments including CEDAW, CRC, CRPD and ICESCR. We wish to improve the quality of reporting on sport to human rights monitoring bodies, including the Universal Periodic Review, through the development of tools and templates to facilitate better reporting by state and non-state actors. The UPR presents a unique opportunity to increase engagement on human rights in and through sport. This side event will report on the momentum in the sports sector to engage with human rights processes and outline the basis of sport as both a human rights in and of itself, and as an enabler of other human rights. It will also provide an opportunity to preview the reporting tools under development to improve UPR and treaty body reporting on sport.

Session Aim and Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate how we can leverage global momentum and policy convergence in sport among state and non-state actors to advocate for the implementation of human rights treaties as they relate to sport.
  2. Present the global actions that exemplify the current time as opportune for accelerated action on human rights in and through sport aligned with the implementation of the SDGs.
  3. Present the reporting templates and advocacy tools relevant to the UPR on sport currently under development.
