The International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA) recognizes the importance of advancing gender equity in sports, particularly for women with disabilities. In line with this commitment, IFAPA encourages participation in the upcoming virtual panel discussion, “Gender Equity and Women with Disabilities in Sport,” organized by WomenSport International (WSI) as part of NGO CSW 69.

The panel will take place on March 12th, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM EDT. It will feature experts from WSI, UNESCO, Safe Sport International, and the University of Johannesburg, who will discuss challenges, research, and solutions aimed at improving inclusion and access to sports for women with disabilities.

Panelists and Topics:

  • Dr. Catherine Carty (UNESCO Chair Manager, Munster Technological University, Ireland) will provide a global perspective on disability in sports and efforts to create a more equitable sports environment.
  • Dr. Sandra Kirby (Safe Sport International, Professor Emerita, University of Winnipeg, Canada) will address human rights challenges in Para sports, focusing on safeguarding, athlete rights, and redefining inclusion.
  • Dr. Cora Burnett (Director, South African Centre of Olympic Studies and Social Impact, University of Johannesburg) will discuss the lack of leadership opportunities for persons with disabilities and strategies to amplify their voices.
  • Dr. Becky Clark (Vice President, WomenSport International, and US Sports Envoy) will highlight grassroots efforts driving change in sports, emphasizing successes, challenges, and future steps.

The panel will be moderated by Diane Huffman, President of WomenSport International.

As the global voice for research-based advocacy in adapted physical activity, IFAPA supports initiatives that promote inclusion and equal opportunities in sport. This event is an important step toward ensuring that the needs and rights of women with disabilities are recognized and addressed at all levels of sports participation and governance.
