A new invited editorial, “Adapted Physical Activity to Enable Participation of Children and Adolescents with Disabilities,” by Professor Kwok Ng has been published in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology.
The editorial discusses how adapted physical activity (APA) can support meaningful participation beyond exercise and physical health. It highlights the importance of collaboration among children, families, professionals, schools, healthcare services, sport organizations, and communities. Examples of community and research-based programmes illustrate how individualized approaches can support fitness, confidence, social connection, and sustained participation.
The article also considers physical activity recommendations for children with disabilities, emphasizing gradual progress, realistic goals, shared decision-making, and recognition that even small increases in activity can be valuable. It argues that participation should also be understood through outcomes such as enjoyment, friendship, independence, confidence, and belonging.
The editorial calls for stronger evidence to guide the development and evaluation of APA programmes and further support participation among children and adolescents with disabilities.
