The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Disability Studies has just been published and is available online. It includes a new reference article titled “Disability and Adapted Physical Activity”, authored by IFAPA Vice President Kwok Ng. The article provides an updated overview of adapted physical activity (APA) and its role in promoting health, inclusion, and well-being for individuals with disabilities.
The publication examines the historical evolution of disability perspectives, from the medical model to more inclusive and social approaches. It highlights how APA contributes not only to physical health but also to psychological and social outcomes, including self-esteem, physical literacy, and social participation.
The article also identifies ongoing barriers such as limited accessibility, lack of resources, and gaps in professional standards and accreditation. It emphasises the need for continued development in research, education, and policy to ensure consistent and high-quality practice worldwide.
This update contributes to the growing body of interdisciplinary knowledge within disability studies and provides an accessible resource for researchers, educators, and practitioners.
