A new research-based Masters opportunity is now open for applications at University College Dublin, in collaboration with Paralympics Ireland. The project focuses on forecasting performance trends in Para athletics, a field with increasing visibility but limited data-driven literature. With the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Paralympic cycle and the launch of the Para Athletics Academy, this initiative aims to inform preparation for upcoming events such as the LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games.
The selected candidate will explore data trends related to event participation, classification popularity, and performance metrics—such as race times, jump heights, and throwing distances. The objective is to support athlete development and strategic resource allocation by identifying shifts in competitiveness and predicting future outcomes.
The scholarship includes a €22,000 annual stipend and full coverage of tuition fees for one year. Candidates must meet University College Dublin admission requirements, hold a relevant undergraduate degree in sport science, data analysis, or a related field, and be available to begin in September 2025.
The project team includes experts from University College Dublin, Para Athletics Ireland, and Sport Ireland, and the research will be conducted alongside a parallel PhD project on talent identification. Interested applicants should contact Professor Kate Pumpa at Kate.Pumpa@ucd.ie to request an expression of interest form before the July 9, 2025 deadline.
