The Research Group Adapted Physical Activity and Psychomotor Rehabilitation at KU Leuven is seeking a doctoral researcher to join a project focused on promoting physical activity among adolescents with intellectual disabilities. The group, within the Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, investigates human functioning through an inclusive and holistic approach, emphasizing health promotion and the interaction between cognition and motor skills.
The project, conducted in collaboration with the Family and Orthopedagogics Research Group (Prof. Sara Nijs) and the University of Limerick (Prof. Sean Healy), examines the transition from school to adult life, a critical period marked by a decline in physical activity levels among young people with intellectual disabilities. Using a mixed-methods design, the study will analyze current post-school pathways and adapted activity opportunities in Belgium, followed by qualitative research involving youth, families, teachers, and service providers. The goal is to co-create and test a sustainable, multicomponent intervention to support lifelong physical activity participation.
Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Sciences, Movement Sciences, Psychology, or Education, demonstrate strong communication and research skills, and show motivation for doctoral studies.
Applications are open until November 7, 2025. For more information, contact Prof. Dr. Debbie Van Biesen at debbie.vanbiesen@kuleuven.be.
