At the recent International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Annual Classification Meeting held in Bonn, Germany, Dr. Raúl Reina, professor at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) and researcher at the University Institute Center for Sports Research (CID), was honored for his contributions to classification in Paralympic sport. Dr. Reina was one of five recipients recognized at the event for their significant efforts to advance the Paralympic classification system, ensuring fair competition for athletes with impairments.

The award highlights Dr. Reina’s long-standing commitment, particularly in CP football, boccia, and Para athletics. His expertise and research have been instrumental in refining the classification processes, fostering a better understanding of how impairments affect athletic performance. Additionally, Dr. Reina has played a pivotal role as Chair of the Classification Committee for NPC Spain, overseeing the development of the National Classification Strategy.

This is the second edition of the IPC Classification Recognition Awards, where representatives from international federations, national Paralympic committees, and the IPC gathered to discuss the new Classification Code. Dr. Reina was also part of a 24-expert working group contributing to the code’s development over the past three years.

Other award recipients include Terrie Moore, Chris Hogg, Hilary Beeton, and Sandra Titulaer, each recognized for their tireless contributions to various sports and classification disciplines, reflecting the collective effort to enhance inclusion and equity in Paralympic competition.
