WheelPower, the national charity for wheelchair sports in the UK, is dedicated to fostering healthier and more active lives among disabled individuals of all ages through movement, activity, and sports. In line with this mission, WheelPower offers the “Engaging Wheelchair Participants in Sport” course designed to equip individuals working with people with physical disabilities in the community with knowledge and confidence.

The course is conveniently divided into two parts:

  1. Self-Guided Learning Module (45 minutes to 1 hour): Participants can engage at their own pace in this module, which aims to deepen their understanding of inclusive practices for individuals with spinal cord injuries and other physical impairments. Topics covered include overcoming barriers to participation, using appropriate language, and off-court considerations to enhance accessibility and inclusivity.
  2. Tutor-Led Online Course via Zoom (Approximately 2 hours): This interactive session, led by experienced tutors, offers participants the opportunity to engage in discussions in breakout rooms and learn from real-life experiences. The focus is on exploring inclusive sports and activities adaptable for individuals with physical disabilities, with the ultimate goal of boosting confidence in supporting disabled individuals to access and enjoy sports, activities, and movement opportunities.
