The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced the appointment of Professor Wayne Derman as its new Medical Director (External). Professor Derman is a specialist in sports medicine and currently leads the Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He brings to this role over two decades of experience in elite sport and Paralympic medicine, with a strong focus on athlete health and injury prevention.
Professor Derman has been an active member of the IPC Medical Committee since 2011, serving as Chair from 2023 to 2024. He acted as the IPC Medical Director during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and previously served as Chief Medical Officer for South Africa’s Olympic and Paralympic teams between 2000 and 2012.
His research has focused on athlete health in Para sport, including injury and illness prevention, contributing significantly to global knowledge in Paralympic sports medicine. In his new role, he will oversee the IPC’s medical strategy, coordinate research initiatives, and support medical service planning for upcoming Paralympic Games.
Professor Derman’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was critical in shaping evidence-based protocols that safeguarded athlete health. His continued focus on science-driven, athlete-centred care aligns with the IPC’s commitment to health and performance.
This appointment reflects a continued effort to ensure high standards in medical care and support across all areas of Paralympic sport.
