A new PhD opportunity is available at Loughborough University around the project entitled ‘What it takes to Win’ in Wheelchair Racing. Unpicking the determinants of performance and enabling data-driven performance decision-making by using existing and emerging technologies?

The studentship provides an opportunity to join a world-class multi-disciplinary team at the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport, on a project designed to refine technological solutions and training design to support wheelchair racing performance.

The project, delivered in collaboration with the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and UK Athletics, will quantify the key determinants of wheelchair racing training and performance across events and impairment groups.

The PhD will involve ‘big data’ and explore the use of current and future technologies to inform equipment selection and to increase our understanding of training and performance loads alongside coaches and athletes.

Further biomechanical profiling specific to wheelchair racing may also be involved as the project develops over the course of the programme of study. The project is designed to make a performance impact for British wheelchair racing leading into Paris 2024 and helping with long-term strategies for Los Angeles 2028.

The studentship is offered full-time for 3 years and will involve vocational opportunities within the EIS’s high-performance environment where possible.

Application deadline: 12 February 2023
