Special Olympics International and Special Olympics Ireland will play a central role at the upcoming International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity (ISAPA 2025), to be held in Tralee, Ireland. Through a comprehensive series of sessions, they will present research, practical strategies, and athlete leadership that promote equity and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities in sport and physical activity.

Key sessions on June 18 include a workshop on inclusive research strategies led by experts and self-advocates, a poster presentation on the development of a Youth Fitness Testing Manual, and a panel on the use of digital technology and wearables to promote active lifestyles. Dr. Alicia Dixon-Ibarra will also present findings from a pilot study on wearable adherence in Special Olympics athletes.

A significant milestone will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Special Olympics International and the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity, formalizing collaboration in global research and inclusion efforts.

On June 19, Special Olympics Ireland will contribute to the Mental Health Summit with a presentation on co-developed mental health resources. Athlete Margaret Turley will also share her personal advocacy journey.

ISAPA 2025 will conclude with a hands-on MATP Masterclass on June 20, led by Dr. Niamh-Elizabeth Mourton, offering certified training and athlete engagement focused on supporting individuals with profound intellectual disabilities.
