The role of sport and cultural life in building inclusive and participatory societies for persons with disabilities in the post – COVID context, organised by Permanent Missions of Italy, Albania and Monaco to the United Nations – NY, UNDESA, UNICEF

This event will be in-person, as well as a live webcast

Persons with disabilities are empowered and guaranteed the full enjoyment of their rights and active participation in all aspects of life in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Additional Protocol and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Persons with disabilities continue to face barriers and discrimination and to experience challenges in the access to services in post-Covid19 recovery phase. Cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport of persons with disabilities should indeed be a concrete goal of post-Covid19 recovery plans and strategies, as a vital step toward achieving the pledge to leave no one behind.

This event aims to ensure that persons with disabilities have an opportunity to organize, develop and participate in disability-specific sporting and recreational activities and, to this end, encourage the provision, on an equal basis with others, of appropriate instruction, training and resources.

The Winning Path – Paralympic Sports and the realization of the full potential of every person, organised by the Permanent Missions of Israel and Germany to the UN

This event will be in-person, as well as a live webcast

BACKGROUND

As signatory states of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), Israel and Germany have been leaders in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. We have participated actively in the Conference of State Parties (COSP) in recent years, including through high-level delegations from our respective capitals, and by holding side events that emphasize our respective activities in this field. These events have constituted a platform for mutual sharing of experience accumulated in various areas of the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

As part of the upcoming COSP15, to be held from 14th through 16th of June 2022, the Permanent Missions of Germany and Israel, will hold a side event focusing on Paralympic sports and on how sport activities increases self-confidence and quality of life. This topic will further illustrate that sports in all spheres of activity level is key for inclusion, and inclusion is fundamental for democracy. Therefore, the right to equal participation in sporting activities is enshrined in Article 30(5) of the UNCRPD. This event will provide an opportunity to highlight and share among others accumulated experiences in the field of Paralympic sports and the challenges athletes face on their path to the podium.

THE WINNING PATH

Israel and Germany believe that there is no place for discrimination between people, including and particularly on the basis of disability – but that providing equal opportunities should be the norm, as pinned down in the UNCRPD, thus allowing each person equal participation and the opportunity to demonstrate their uniqueness.

By bringing together successful Paralympic athletes and high-level government officials from both Germany and Israel, we seek to send a powerful message that sport is a great way to realize the full potential of every person and to strengthen social cohesion.
